Kraftvärmeverk 1 (KVV1), Stockholm's largest combined heat and power plant operated by Stockholm Exergi, has completed a major modernisation: 241 valves were retrofitted with AUMA electric actuators, all integrated on Profinet industrial Ethernet.
Originally built in 1976 for fossil fuels, the plant's boilers now run on renewable fuels such as bio-oil. The project aims to extend the plant's life by around 20 years while continuing to secure Stockholm's winter heat and electricity supply.
Project Highlights:
· Equipment: SA and SQ multi-turn actuators with AC 01.2 controls, GST and GS gearboxes and LE linear units; SAR and SARV modulating actuators serve loops with stricter control requirements;
· Profinet advantages: high reliability thanks to integrated redundancy, easy and flexible integration, and advanced diagnostic options;
· Results: improved efficiency, reliability and safety of the CHP plant, with reduced operating costs;
· Scope of automation: fuel supply, feed water and steam systems, flue gas cleaning, and district heating feed;
· Execution: AUMA service experts dismantled the old devices on site and installed and commissioned the new ones; AUMA manages entire projects from analysis, sizing and selection through installation and commissioning.
The project demonstrates a viable path for ageing plants to gain another two decades of service through actuator and communication upgrades — a useful reference for retrofit programmes at existing power and heating plants.
