Fisher DVC2000 Digital Valve Controller: Quick Setup, Travel Calibration & Troubleshooting
source:    date:2026-09-29

The Fisher DVC2000, from Emerson's Fisher brand, is a digital valve controller using non-contact position feedback (Hall sensor) for high accuracy and reliability. It supports HART communication and can be configured and diagnosed remotely with a 475 field communicator. This article covers the DVC2000's main specifications, loop-powered wiring, the local-panel quick setup and travel calibration procedure, tuning (gain code) settings, analog-input and position-transmitter calibration, and common fault remedies.

Main Specifications

  • Input signal: 4–20 mA DC (two-wire, loop powered)
  • Supply voltage: 9 VDC minimum
  • Air supply pressure: 7 bar maximum
  • Position transmitter output: 4–20 mA, 8–30 VDC supply, ±2% of stroke
  • Limit switches: 1 mA break / 4 mA make, 4.3–30 VDC supply
  • Ingress protection: IP67

Wiring

The DVC2000 is loop powered — the 4–20 mA input doubles as the working supply. Terminals are in the connection box at the bottom of the housing. HART is connected in parallel with the signal loop. The position transmitter output and limit switches need separate supplies (8–30 VDC / 4.3–30 VDC).

Note: ensure loop voltage stays above 9 VDC, otherwise the positioner cannot operate properly.

Commissioning Procedure

Basic setup and initial calibration

  • Enter the menu: open the front cover; after power-up press ↓; the display steps through "Quick Setup", "Travel Calibration", "Tuning", "Detailed Setup"
  • Quick Setup: press → to enter and set:
  • Zero-signal valve closed or open: select "closed" for air-to-open, "open" for air-to-close
  • Pressure units: bar, psi or kPa
  • Low input signal: 4 mA for normal modulation
  • High input signal: 20 mA
  • Characteristic: linear
  • Travel calibration: select "auto", press and hold → for 3 s then release; the positioner strokes the valve 100%→0%→50% and shows "calibration complete"
  • Tuning: if the valve is unstable, select "tuning"→"auto", hold → for 3 s and release; "auto tuning in progress" appears, then "auto tuning complete"
  • Verify: apply different signal values and check that positioning is accurate and stable

Shortcut: in any submenu, pressing ← and → together for 3–10 s returns to the main display.

Quick commissioning (re-check of an already calibrated loop)

  • Open the front cover and apply power (4–20 mA)
  • Press ↓ — "Quick Setup" appears
  • Press → — "valve will move, press → for 3 seconds" appears
  • Hold → for 3 s and release; the valve self-checks automatically
  • "Quick setup complete" appears; press → to return to the main display

Tuning (gain code)

Tuning matches positioner output to valve response. Gain codes run from C to M: C is slowest, M fastest. "L" is the usual choice, set so the valve does not oscillate. Procedure: press ↓ to find "tuning", press → to confirm, select "manual", hold → for 3 s to enter the tuning screen and modify.

Analog input calibration

  • On the main display press ↓ five times, then → to acknowledge the warning
  • Adjust the adjustable power supply to 4 mA input, press →
  • Adjust to 20 mA, press →
  • Select "SAVE AND EXIT"

Position transmitter calibration

  • On the main display press ↓ six times, then →
  • Use ↑↓ to set the current-meter output to 4 mA, press →
  • Adjust to 20 mA, press →
  • Select "SAVE AND EXIT"

Common Faults and Remedies

FaultPossible causeRemedy
Valve does not move on remote commandValve sticking; command wire detached; air leak; positioner failureHave mechanical crew free the valve; check command wiring; check for leaks; check positioner parameter display
Large command/feedback deviationLoose feedback assembly; valve stickingCheck and tighten feedback assembly; recalibrate; involve mechanical crew
Sluggish valve actionPositioner moving parts jammed; air circuit leak; cylinder leakCheck positioner moving parts; check supply/exhaust piping; check cylinder
Valve oscillationTuning gain code too highEnter "tuning"→"manual" and lower the gain code (e.g. M to L or C)
