ABB TZID-C Smart Valve Positioner: Commissioning & P1–P11 Parameter Guide
source:    date:2026-09-29

The ABB TZID-C smart electro-pneumatic valve positioner uses microprocessor control with auto-adjustment, adaptive control and self-diagnostics, supports HART, and is configured via panel keys or a handheld communicator. This article covers TZID-C's main specifications, terminal wiring, pre-commissioning checks, auto-adjust programs for linear and part-turn valves, operating modes, the complete P1–P11 parameter menu, and common fault remedies.

Main Specifications

  • Input signal: 4–20 mA DC, max. load 410 Ω
  • Operating voltage: about 8.7 V DC (from the input signal); never exceed 30 V / 50 mA
  • Max. air supply: 6 bar (respect the actuator's rated pressure)
  • Explosion protection: Ex ia IIC T6
  • Ingress protection: IP66
  • Control accuracy: ±0.5% F.S.

Wiring

TZID-C terminals are clearly arranged; basic operation needs only +11/-12 (control signal) and +31/-32 (position feedback):

TerminalFunctionDescription
+11 / -12Control signal inputDC 4–20 mA, max. load 410 Ω
+31 / -32Position feedback outputDC 4–20 mA, powered from DCS +24 V
+41 / -42Closed-limit outputOptocoupler / reed contact (5–11 VDC, <8 mA)
+51 / -52Open-limit outputOptocoupler / reed contact (5–11 VDC, <8 mA)
+81 / -82Switch inputOptocoupler input
+83 / -84Alarm outputOptocoupler output

Note: the positioner is powered from the input signal (two-wire); terminal voltage is about 8.7 V DC — never apply 24 V DC directly to the positioner or the electronics will be destroyed.

Commissioning Procedure

Pre-commissioning checks

  • Air supply: purge dust and debris from the piping first (30 minutes recommended); verify that pressure after the regulator meets the actuator nameplate
  • Signal: connect the 4–20 mA input, two-wire powered from the DCS
  • Check feedback-lever angles:
  • Hold MODE and tap ↑ or ↓ until 1.3 (MAN_SENS) is displayed
  • Release MODE and drive the actuator to both end positions with ↑↓
  • Linear actuators: within -28° to +28°
  • Part-turn actuators: within -57° to +57°
  • Full-travel angle must be at least 25°

Auto-adjust program

Method 1 (linear valves):

  • Hold MODE for 5 s until "ADJ_LIN" appears
  • Release MODE, then hold it again until the countdown reaches 0
  • Release MODE — the auto-adjust program starts
  • It completes in about 5 minutes, stores parameters automatically and switches to mode 1.1 CTRL_FIX

Method 2 (part-turn valves):

  • Hold ENTER for 5 s until "ADJ_ROT" appears
  • Release ENTER, then hold it again until the countdown reaches 0
  • Release ENTER — the auto-adjust program starts
  • It completes in about 5 minutes, stores parameters automatically and switches to mode 1.1 CTRL_FIX

Operating modes

ModeNameDescription
1.0CTRL_ADPAdaptive control (remote), for small strokes and fast response
1.1CTRL_FIXFixed-parameter control (remote); the usual choice
1.2MANUALManual control via ↑↓ keys
1.3MAN_SENSChecks whether the feedback-lever range is suitable

Quick operation: holding ↑ then ↓ as well (keeping ↑ held) drives the actuator fully open quickly; the reverse closes it quickly.

Parameter menu (P1–P11)

Enter the configuration menu: hold ↑ and ↓ together, press ENTER, wait 3 s while the counter runs from 3 to 0, then release ↑↓ — "P1.0 ACTUATOR" is displayed.

Example: changing valve action (direct/reverse)

  • Hold ↑ and ↓ together, press ENTER, wait 3 s to enter the configuration menu — "P1.0 ACTUATOR" appears
  • Hold MODE and ENTER together and tap ↑ to reach group P2 — "P2._ SETPOINT" appears
  • Hold MODE and tap ↑ three times to "P2.3 ACTION"
  • Tap ↑ to select "REVERSE"
  • Move to "P2.8 EXIT", select NV_SAVE, and hold ENTER for 3 s until the counter finishes
